During a near-death drowning experience, seven-year-old Ophelia Carter meets an angel who bestows on her the power to heal people from their ills, diseases, and nightmares. Ophelia’s parents immediately begin exploiting her gift by setting up a healing center, charging admission, and forcing their daughter to put her healing powers on full display. Ophelia enjoys healing people, but each healing takes a major physical and mental toll on her, and being in the limelight attracts unwanted attention. Ophelia begins to grow weary and to trust her parents less and less.

One day, a visitor named David shows up at the healing center and sweeps a now college-age Ophelia off her feet, in part by convincing her that her parents are exploiting her. But what Ophelia doesn’t realize is that David suffers a psychosis that has put him in communication with an evil entity name Perkele. Using David to do his bidding, Perkele intends to cut Ophelia off from her parents and use her powers for evil instead of good. MELISSA SAARI grew up in Butte, Montana, which is Evel Knievel’s hometown, and Montana is the setting of her romance novel Mystic Lake. She graduated from Southern New Hampshire University with a Master of Arts and Literature, with a concentration in screenwriting. Melissa loves animals and has taken care of many cats and dogs, including her two current dogs, Marla and Leo. She loves dogs because of their loyalty and protectiveness, which are traits of the characters in Melissa’s young adult novels Curse of the Lion People and Curse of the Black Dragon and her horror novels The Red Satin Shoes and Blue Satin Diary. Melissa currently lives in Central Washington, where the wild and mighty currents of the Columbia River flow past her door with an air of power and mysticism that further informs her writing.
