The “songs of degrees” (songs of ascent) crescendo from Psalm 120, their lowest point, to Psalm 134, their highest point. There is no “praise ye the Lord” in Psalm 120, but by the time you arrive at Psalm 134, praising and blessing the Lord fill its lyrics.
As these songs progress from one to the next, there is a story of Israel’s history unfolding. Every Jew could relate to this history and find themselves in each lyric of each Psalm. The Jews would intensify their worship of Almighty God as they would realize His everlasting mercy, deliverance, and love. Equally for the church, as we study through the songs of ascent, we can also discover God’s immutable character and what it means to us.
If there ever was a time for the church to look up, get up, and worship, that time is now! Jesus is coming soon, and there is still work to do before He returns. I pray this volume inspires you to identify yourself in Christ, fulfilling His perfect will.
