Santo Domingo.- Héctor William Zorrilla coloca hoy en el mercado de lectores Los Reinos de la Ternura, un libro de cuentos con todas las de la ley, en que se aprecia, sin necesidad de indagaciones profundas, que su autor anda en búsqueda de su expresión propia, a partir precisamente de la experiencia propia.
En los finales del siglo veinte, muchos cuentistas de Hispanoamérica se adhirieron a las corrientes experimentalistas entre las que asomó sus fauces aquella que propugnaba -y tal vez propugna- por un cuento sin anécdota, un cuento que no cuenta nada. Pero los cuentos de William Zorrilla revelan que este autor no ha caído en el gancho de escribir cuentos que no cuentan, que ha de ser la más difícil tarea.
Muchos cuentistas retornan al cuento clásico, al cuento que cuenta una historia. No queremos un cuento reburujado con estampas, cuadros, consejas, tradiciones, leyendas, relatos o géneros menores que tienen en común la forma narrativa, pero que difieren sustancialmente del cuento en cuando a técnica y estilo. Tampoco propugnamos por esa rara especie denominada anticuento, con el que se ha pretendido negar al cuento propiamente dicho. Debemos aspirar a cuentos que hagan honor a la definición: "El cuento es el tigre de la fauna literaria", como lo denominó Juan Bosh.
A propósito de Juan Bosh, resulta difícil hablar de teoría del cuento en la República Dominicana sin acudir a este maestro de la escritura. Se me ocurre citar, aún de memoria, su afirmación de que es más difícil lograr un buen libro de cuentos que una novela.
La cito en provecho de William Zorrilla, pues él ha escrito un buen libro de cuentos. El autor ha advertido en una introducción que aparece al inicio del libro, que quería tener su propia voz y también "quería escribir cuentos que reflejaran mi propio estilo".
Pudiera decir de paso que esas palabras vienen sobrando, pues los cuentos no las necesitan para ser comprendidos y disfrutados, sentidos.
Ahí esta su voz. Y es la voz de un escritor, consciente de su oficio, brotan las fobias, las pasiones, los cuentistas retornan al cuento clásico, al cuento que cuenta una historia.
Sobre realidades y fantasías, sobre magias y hechos ciertos construye William Zorrilla el universo de sus cuentos, todos los cuales llevan diseminada una apreciable porción de poesía.
Unos cuentos referirán historias tan extrañas como las contenidas en "Adiós, Hemingway" y "El Reino de las Fobias", mientras otros nos conducen a un reino mágico al estilo de la mitología griega. "Sentados debajo del árbol, Ibis y Fito dejaron fluir en sus mentes las experiencias compartidas con seres extraordinarios". Así comienza el cuento El Relato de una Supra-existencia.
Héctor William Zorrilla no es un hombre extraño al arte de escribir. Ha publicado tres libros en el campo de su especialidad profesional, que es Psicología. Sus cuentos no son ajenos a esa formación y mucho menos a esa experiencia. Me parece que el fruto más provechoso de ello se encuentra en la universidad de sus temas.
