About this listen

One of "The Most Wanted Crime Novels of 2023"—Crimefictionlover.com

Join a heart-racing road trip across 1970s America as two cousins make the heist of their lives and must avoid the cops and criminals hot on their tails.

It's the summer of '74 . . . Richard Nixon has resigned from office, CB radios are the hot new thing, and in the great state of Texas two cousins hatch a plan to drive $1 million worth of stolen weed to Idaho, where some lunatic is gearing up to jump Snake River Canyon on a rocket-powered motorcycle. But with a vengeful sheriff on their tail and the revered and feared marijuana kingpin of Central Texas out to get his stash back, Chuck and Dean are in for the ride of their lives—if they can make it out alive . . .

Scott Von Doviak, longtime pop-culture journalist for The A. V. Club, Film Threat, the Hollywood Reporter, and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, made a splash with his debut novel, Charlesgate Confidential, which Stephen King called "terrific" and "a fun machine . . . the white-knuckle kind." With Lowdown Road, he cements his reputation for pedal-to-the-metal storytelling that also makes you think about just who we are and where our darker roads might lead us.

wild run

Even though this concerns crimes that are being committed by most of the characters in this story, is overly laced with comedy.

Great story telling!

Loved the 70's setting, and the twists and turns in the plot! Kept my interest cover to cover, what a ride!

A perfect summer escape heist novel

Lowdown Road is a great southern-fried tribute to 70's drive-in fare. It's a compelling heist story that pulls you in, twists and turns and leaves you wanting more. Two Texas cousins steal a taco truck loaded with 250 pounds of high-grade Mexican pot to drive up to Idaho where Evil Knievel will attempt the to jump Snake River Canyon on a rocket-powered motorcycle so they can unload the pot at a hefty profit. The only problem is they're being trailed by a sherif who's gone off the deep end, a biker gang and, the pot dealer himself. You'll meet a whole range of colorful characters along the way as the cousins dodge their way through trouble.
This is a great summer read and the narration is well done. Be sure to check out Von Doviak's first book, Charlesgate Confidential, also.

Had to pace myself

I could have finished this in one sitting and had to pace myself to make it last longer. A joke that one of the main characters would have laughed at. If you liked smoky and the bandit but wished it was modernized this is perfect for you.

hmm... what have I been sold?

Besides the mention of Evil Knievel and a few classic country and rock songs, this is hardly a 70's story. Instead, it's a poorly disguised modern story laced with the poison of the "woke" mind virus. Once one figures that out, which will happen quickly, then there's nothing there to entertain the reader.
