About this listen

Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

My fiancé brought me tea and scrambled eggs in bed that morning, and we snuggled together, talking about buying our rings, and about our perfect wedding next year. Then we headed into town. He held my hand and gazed at the ring I liked best, a smile spreading slowly over his face. Then a glass of bubbly to celebrate. I felt flushed, excited and ready for the rest of my life with the man I loved. We race to get on the train home. It screams to a halt and I run towards its open doors. Made it. I think he’s right behind me — but when I turn around, he’s gone.

Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Simply excellent
This is the 7th Minier book that is narrated by the amazing narator Hugues Martel that I have finished. The first one without detective Martin Servas and set outside of France. While the background to the crime story in the foreground is an area that I did not expect from B. Minier -Hong Kong, artificial intelligence.- this breathtaking book proves again how amazing, this Author is. Hugues Martel’s natural, full of talent naration is doubling the plaisure. I am a huge fan of both.
One slightly disturbing topic which has nothing to do with the book itself is the obvious mismatch between the original chapter numbering of the book and the chapters in the Audiobook application. While the chapter Audiobook shows is say 58 the narrator reads in the middle of such chapter “Chapter 39” for example. This was the case with all the audiobooks I listened including B. Minier books. I wonder why this is happening.
Anyway, I would recommend this book to anyone without hesitation.

Good to fall asleep quickly with
What a disappointment. I quite liked some of Minier’s earlier books. This one, on the other hand, is no more than a mixture of computer technical manual, tired Dr. Fu Manchu yellow-peril racist cliches complete with long curved yellow fingernails, and superficial xenophobic stereotypes of Hong Kong the city and its residents. Pure Garbage.
It is hard to listen to - the writer totally insults the listener’s intelligence. On top of that, it is SOOOO tedious. There is no suspense, no plot, no logic, no interesting characters.
It does put people to sleep pretty quickly - so if you are looking for chemical-free sleeping-aid, this may work for you.
Be careful, thought, it may bore you to death.
