Mit Sigmund Freuds Psychoanalyse übernimmt das Unbewusste die Herrschaft über den Menschen und fordert die altehrwürdige Vernunftphilosophie heraus.
Und auch der Blick auf das große Ganze scheint versperrt zu sein: Die Soziologie, ein neuer Konkurrent, beansprucht das Terrain für sich. Relevant bleibt die Philosophie nur dann, wenn sie einen Mehrwert schafft, der über die Perspektive der Naturwissenschaften, der Psychologen und Soziologen hinausgeht. Sie muss näher an die Dinge heran, tiefer ins Leben blicken und sehr viel genauer beschreiben als sie es traditionell getan hat. Muss die Philosophie das Fernrohr nach innen richten, tief in sich hineinsehen, dorthin, wo die experimentelle Psychologie nie hingelangt? Auf diese Weise entstehen Edmund Husserls Phänomenologie und die neuen Ontologien Martin Heideggers, Alfred North Whiteheads und Nicolai Hartmanns. Soll sie bei der Logik der Sprache ansetzen? So tun es die analytischen Philosophen im Anschluss an Ludwig Wittgenstein und Bertrand Russell. Oder ist Philosophie ein Denken in Bildern, Metaphern und Zwischenräumen wie bei Ernst Bloch und Walter Benjamin?
Parallel zur Selbstverständigung der Philosophen radikalisieren sich die Zeitläufte. Der Erste Weltkrieg erschüttert die abendländische Zivilisation und fordert zum radikalen Neudenken auf. Ein Gedankenfestival der Ideen mit einem jähen Ende: dem Zweiten Weltkrieg.
