About this listen

I have lived in Kiev most of my life, and I watched my city evolve from a sleepy little town to one of the most corrupt places in Europe (arguably, in the world). For that reason (i.e., massive corruption and resulting lawlessness), Ukraine has experienced two revolutions (Orange and Maidan) since declaring independence in 1991. During the second revolution I was a night-time photographer, capturing “behind-the-barricades” images for one year (see www.frishbergsphotos.com). That’s how I was able to write the story that you are about to read. Although this short story is fiction, it’s based on real life events, where I try to explain three things: (1) why the Maidan Revolution happened; (2) what happened during the Maidan Revolution; and (3) the aftermath. Almost all of the names are fake, and lots of facts are intentionally distorted to dramatize how regular people can become revolutionaries (also known as “domestic terrorists”) in the eye of the law. Last, but not least, all the photos in this story are real. Historical Fiction
