La manna è la linfa dei muddii, che si cristallizza in cannoli bianchi dolcissimi e preziosi: ma essa si produce solo in condizioni molto speciali, incidendo la corteccia nel momento incantato in cui gli alberi mormorano nella notte e si offrono docili alle mani sapienti di chi li ferisce.
Romilda cresce così tra gli insegnamenti della madre, che attraverso la cura delle api le insegna la dolcezza e il potere, e quelli del padre, che conosce la natura e sa che dolcezza e potere possono essere distruttivi se non li si controlla. Ma Romilda è destinata a incontrare presto la violenza del ferro e la prepotenza del fuoco: don Francesco, barone di Ventimiglia, la chiede in sposa ancora bambina. Seguire don Francesco significherà lasciare il bosco, conoscere le durezze di una vita più agiata ma profondamente inautentica, in cui anche l'esperienza della maternità può finire per espropriare una donna di se stessa. E mentre la Sicilia viene investita dal vento che scuote la penisola intera in lotta per l'unità nazionale, anche per questi due sposi si compie un cammino di sofferenza e di prova: le loro nature opposte si incontrano e si scontrano, si forgiano tra le fiamme della passione e nel gelo di un silenzio sempre più profondo.
