About this listen

Manuel Jesus Ramirez Rodriguez, a passionate nine-year-old boy from Mexico City, loves to paint murals like his hero, the legendary 20th century Mexican muralist, Diego Rivera. He dreams of the day he will become as famous as Diego Rivera so he can take care of his family and never have to watch his father clean other people's buildings ever again. However, because of this single-minded quest, Manuel learns how his actions can affect the lives of others in ways he never imagined. Manuel takes a solo journey to learn more about Diego Rivera's art, but what he finds is a greater understanding of his own culture. The theme of this book revolves around family; however, an appreciation of who we are emerges as colorful as the soul that is Mexico.

What a wonderful story by Ms. Kato, of a boy with a passion for color, life and family. The tale comes alive with Ms. Oliveira’s story telling with a distinct voice for each person. I look forward to Ms. Kato’s next story. Highly recommend.

What an enjoyable small book. Wonderful role model (Manuel) for children who have artistic gifts and fear taking risks. The author, Jeanine Escalier Kato, writes with strength, sincerity, and has a poetic style. This is further enhanced by the narrator, Ms Oliveira, who is able to use her voice and acting skill to create many different characters. Manuel, loves Diego Rivera, and his drive to paint out ways his parent’s concerns. Time and space disappear. His ancestry and history come alive. What a sweet and creative child.

Manuel is a 9-year-old budding artist who lives in Mexico. In the course of the story, he endangers his family's housing, but then saves the day -- in both cases, through his enthusiasm for art and for the artist Diego Rivera. This book offers children a brief introduction to that artist. Young listeners are likely to have the same reaction I had to the recorded version -- an appreciation of a story warmly told, and the sense that they're hearing, not one narrator, but a lively collection of children and adults, male and female, preschool and up.

Vibrant characters of all ages, by a cast of 1
