About this listen

Ted's ex-wife is dead at the beach house he built. The police think he killed her.

They're wrong. But can he prove it?

Marcia took everything in the divorce—the house, the money, and nearly Ted's sanity. Now she's been found drowned in the remote New Zealand waters where Ted once found peace.

The police have their suspect. The community has their gossip. But Ted suspects Marcia's secrets ran deeper than anyone imagined.

When a second victim is poisoned, Ted realizes someone is cleaning up loose ends. With his daughter's safety at stake and his freedom on the line, he must navigate Marcia's web of lies before the killer strikes again.

Or before he becomes the next victim of his own past.

I pretty much listened to this almost straight through. I was looking for a mystery set in NZ, but wasn’t expecting such good writing and such an interesting story. Great plot, I probably could have guessed who the villain was pretty early on, but it wasn’t obvious and the path to getting there was twisty and turny enough to lead me astray a couple of times. The characters were believable and endearing, I wish this was a series. I love when a book leaves you wondering where the characters are now. Hoping to find more from Tannis Laidlaw in the future. Also, the scenic descriptions were wonderful, and took me right back to the country I’ve come to love during my travels. Might even listen again… the performance loses a star for the few odd pauses where there shouldn’t be, but I see it was narrated by AI. That isn’t obvious, but it seems like the reader doesn’t turn the page mid sentence fast enough. Would love to hear it from a human reader.

Lovely descriptive writing, enthralling story
