About this listen

As the most celebrated European to explore Asia, Marco Polo was the original global traveler and the earliest bridge between East and West. A universal icon of adventure and discovery, he has inspired six centuries of popular fascination and spurious mythology. Now, from acclaimed author Laurence Bergreen, comes the first fully authoritative biography of one of the most enchanting figures in world history. In this masterly work, Marco Polo's incredible odyssey, along the Silk Road and through all the fantastic circumstances of his life, is chronicled in sumptuous and illuminating detail.

Drawing on original sources in more than half a dozen languages, and his own travels along Polo's route in China and Mongolia, Bergreen explores the lingering controversies surrounding Polo's legend, settling age-old questions and testing others for significance. Synthesizing history, biography, and travelogue, this is a timely chronicle of a man who extended the boundaries of human knowledge and imagination. Destined to be the definitive account of its subject for decades to come, Marco Polo takes us on a journey to the limits of history - and beyond.

I like a good history story before heading to bed, so this was perfect for me. It very briefly goes through Marco Polos travels. My only complaint is that I really wanted it to go more in depth on scholarship of marco polo. How disputed are certain facts he gives by scholars? Especially the debate over whether or bit he actually did what he said he’d do. The book does touch on this a bit, but just note quite enough to satisfy my tastes. Nonetheless, this was a great audio book and I could see myself stumbling upon it again a few more times down the road.

Really enjoyable, but had me longing for more.

The first recorded book I ever heard more than 20 years ago was "The Travels of Marco Polo" and I was hooked. Marco Polo's adventures still seemed exotic, fantastic, and surreal but the drawback was he'd be talking about places that had names that didn't correlate with the present, he would describe certain things, for example unicorns, that left you wondering what he saw, and more. This book helps put all these pieces together, explains historical background of the period and places, and explores Marco himself.

The book is fun, entertaining, easy to listen to, and has a great reader. Wonderful historical adventure.

The story was fascinating, full of historical events, places and customs. Hard to believe Marco Polo’s story occurred over 700 years ago! Very entertaining book, especially for wannabe explorers.
