About this listen

Stefan Zweig (Marie Antoinette).

Amazing!

Stefan Zweig never ceases to amaze me. I have read many of his novels and essays, but this was my first biography (other than his own biography, The World of Yesterday, which is brilliant).
Zweig is of course a very serious researcher, so his historical work is impecable, but he is also such a perceptive person and remarkable good judge of female character for a person of his time. He did not write some boring hero’s tale of Marie Antoinette, but a profoundly sensitive analysis of her life and soul. Of course it also gives a very deep view into the times of the French Revolution generally, but at heart it is a fair and unbiased recounting of an extraordinary life with a very unpredictable and interesting arch. It shows that people do not show their real colors and overall potential until their are seriously challenged by life. And people who may have been quite frivolous during the “good and easy times” find their true inner strength and character when confronted with serious adversity and they can surprise you.
