Publisher's summary

When a United States marshal retires their badge and hangs up their gun, more often than not, their only remaining desire is to ride off into a distant horizon and live out the remainder of their lives in peace and solitude. When Oliver Blackstone sailed from Galveston, Texas, to Boston, Massachusetts, it was also his deepest wish. After bringing an untold number of the Western Frontier's most dangerous criminals to justice and sending more than 100 of them to face judgment in the hereafter, he'd been dubbed "The Deadliest Man Alive" by renowned frontier journalist J.C. Cavanaugh, and reigned supreme at the top of "The List" for more than a decade.

While his intention was to fade into the setting sun and begin anew, far from the territory where his legend had been born, everything changed the moment he met Sarah Hutchins on the steps of the bank, mere hours after arriving in Boston. Faced with such an overwhelming and mutual attraction, Oliver was prepared to amend his carefully laid plans to make room for this unexpected thief of his heart. Unfortunately, her father, Leonard Hutchins, wasn't nearly as enamored with the idea as Oliver and his daughter were, and in his attempt to keep them apart, he would dredge up the demons that Marshal Oliver Blackstone thought he'd permanently laid to rest along with his legendary Colt Walker 1847.

The thing is, some spirits are restless, and no matter how deep you bury them, they will eventually claw their way back to the surface to remind you of who you were, who you are, and who you will always be. With an indomitable spirit like that of Marshal Oliver James Blackstone, only a fool would believe it could remain buried for long.

Fitting End to a Stellar Series

I have to say that westerns are not my genre of choice, but the Marshal Oliver Blackstone series left me eagerly reading the next book in the series. Sorry to see it end. This final chapter of Marshal Blackstone's story revolves around Oliver's determination to make a fortune for his true love, so he sets off to try his hand mining for gold. With help from his shaman side, he accomplishes his task. But in true Blackstone fashion, nothing is ever simple, and he must face more bad guys before he comes home to Sarah. Craig Abbott did an great job narrating. Riano D. McFarland has done an outstanding job in this western series. Looking forward to more books from this author.

Oliver's New Beginnings

Oliver Blackstone just wants to leave his old life as a US Marshal behind and live out the rest of his days with a ranch, wife and a couple of kids. Life can never be that easy especially after he meets the lovely Sarah Hutchins who turned his head and heart after a chance run in. I don't want to give away any spoilers but let's just say he has it bad and nothing and no one is going to stop him from having his happily ever after.

The story is phenomenal and very well written full of action, drama, suspense, and of course romance. I am hooked and could not stop listening as I became invested in this very vivid intriguing story. This series is a must Read/ Listen to for anyone who loves action-packed thrill rides that keep you on the edge of your seat. I can't say enough good things about this book or series. I received this book for free upon my request. I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased review here of my own volition.

A Simple Feel Good Western

The story itself was pretty much as expected for the genre; strong, mysterious and rugged man facing some threat that prevents him from winning his love interest … in this case, it is the marshal’s reputation and all of the young guns trying to win a name by taking him out … and a young lady who doesn’t quite fit into the Boston High Society her daddy’s wealth brings. Over all … it is a fell good tale that follows a well worn and very predictable path. The characters are all too good to be true, but are fun none-the-less (especially Oliver). Here there are two basic plots … how Oliver can become wealthy enough to “deserve” his lady love (which doesn’t hit home for me at all) and how to keep the danger from his violent past from breaking in on his new life of retirement. So the first half of the story is focused on trying to keep his history as a western marshal a secret (which is a bit of a stretch … with a bit of a genie out of the bottle problem that never really gets solved). The second half of the story is Oliver chasing his gold to solve the wealth problem. The story moves quickly here and there is enough hand waving to prevent any buildup before we get to the anticipated climax. All of that considered, the narration was quite good and makes this a fun distraction worth the effort.

I was given this free advance review/listener copy (ARC) audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
