About this listen

With this revelatory and painstakingly researched book, Martha Washington, the invisible woman of American history, at last gets the biography she deserves. In place of the domestic frump of popular imagination, Patricia Brady resurrects the wealthy, attractive, and vivacious young widow who captivated the youthful George Washington. Here are the able landowner, the indomitable patriot (who faithfully joined her husband each winter at Valley Forge), the shrewd diplomat, and emotional mainstay. And even as it brings Martha Washington into sharper and more accurate focus, this sterling life sheds light on her marriage, her society, and the precedents she established for future First Ladies.

Stick with it!

I like the content of the book. it was hard to get into at first because of all the detailed background information about family information. The narration however seemed a bit choppy at times and not quite clear. I would still suggest this book for history lovers.

Such a great life and story!

The author did so well making this book about Mrs. Washington and not just focusing on her presidential husband.
Well researched, written. Mrs. Washington was a prestigious and thoughtful woman and the author portrayed her story well. Almost taking me to the 1700s in time.

A must read for those interested in presidential history and women’s role in the early founding of this country.

In-depth portrayal of a woman we all think we know

Really enjoyed this biography. There is a lot of biographical information, and repeated names as was common during the time, so there were times I had to go back and re-listen to a portion. I ended up purchasing a print copy as well, and am glad I had it to reference. The narrator is pleasant to listen to, but there were several occasions where she misread a word in the text- "meditated" instead of "mediated," etc. Perhaps no great thing, but frustrating as the word she read completely changed the meaning of the sentence. Could have benefited from better direction, perhaps.

DAR Book Club

My DAR book club read this book. The person reading the book made me feel like I was hearing the story from Martha, Washington herself. It was very detailed, including giving list of how many of what household items were taken from one place to another.

It was well written, and gave a lot of historical information that I was glad to have
