About this listen
Life is hard in the best of times; in war, life is hell. Matilda had been in Vicksburg a little over two years when the war caught up with her again.
Alex McDowell had a way about him that drew folks near. Whether it was the warmth of his soft Georgia drawl or the quiet way he moved through life, men respected him, and women fancied him. His hankering for adventure had taken him from the coastal plains of Georgia to the piney woods of east Texas. Along the way, he had fallen in love.
They were simply travelers, one running to his future, the other from her past. Three hundred miles lay between them and their destiny.
The years flowed by her, unlike how water smooths stones as it washes over them; they had sharpened the edges like a whetstone against a knife. Age had not softened Matilda one bit.
Much of the story is fiction; as always, there are threads of truth woven through the tapestry.
It is up to the listener to decide, what is fact, and what is fiction.
