About this listen

It's a jungle out there.

Literally. At least for Evan Tanner, an eternally sleepless, sometime superspy, who finds himself in Africa on the trail of the AWOL ruler of tiny Modonoland. It seems the petty despot's gone missing, and he's taken the state treasury along with him.

No stranger to impossible missions and international peril, Tanner's been in over his head before. This time, however, he's in imminent danger of being buried alive. And it all has to do with the CIA, white supremacists, moderate revolutionaries...and a blond jungle bombshell named (no joke!) Sheena.

Tanner's always been a sucker for a pretty face and a curvaceous body, especially one that's wrapped in leopard skin. But this red-hot renegade daughter of a local missionary is a man-eater.

Which means this time Tanner's goose is well and truly cooked.

Outrageous but fun

Ok, so I've listened to the whole Tanner series and this one starts you back out with Tanner in trouble as usual. He's buried alive and it brings in the Opium fields from the Scorless Thai book. I have to say it was entertaining and fun to listen to if you aren't too easily offended. Tanner is definitely a messed up, imperfect guy and he knows it. He makes for a very interesting main character/hero. Apparently there are no STD's in this world Tanner lives in because I've lost track of how many women all over the world he has slept with during this series. In this one he even beds a 15 year old who is marrying age in her culture...but in his he would go to jail. lol. Block also took the story of Sheena (if any of you have ever watched the movie) and made her out to be this crazy, murderous cannibal. Her story definitely gets changed a lot. I enjoyed it although I believe the books are getting more and more outrageous and less spy like. I don't mind the craziness and all the weird stuff but if you are going to take it serious then this isn't for you. His first couple books were more government spy like with a little humor mixed in.
The series has definitely took a different direction now. The characters were interesting and Holland as usual made them come to life. I especially liked the character voices he created for Bowman & Ndoro. There was also a surprising twist which was pretty cool. I can say Holland makes any story pretty interesting to listen to. He takes the job very seriously and you can hear the hard work and preparation that goes into each story he narrates. Overall this was a pretty fun story and even though the series has taken a different turn I'm still enjoying them. Block & Holland definitely are a good combo and compliment each other. I look forward to more work from them both.

Tanner

This is the last book on Tanner. It's a fun book to listen to. it's amusing. I received a free copy of this book and that has no influence on my review. Theo Holland does a great job narraiting this book.

The adventure continues but with a forewarning

Another impossibly possible adventure from Block.Building on the zombie motif long before zombies became popular, Block’s prescient pen is Well at work even from the late 1960s. The caveat, this one contains a line Of adolescent sexuality with the elder Tanner. Even in the context of the sexual revolution this one is awkward. Without that the story is a five star. As usual, Holland does a fantastic job with the narration.
