About this listen

The Man in the High Castle meets Pacific Rim in this action-packed alternate-history novel from the award-winning author of United States of Japan. Germany and Japan won WWII and control of the US, and a young man has one dream: to become a mecha pilot.

Makoto Fujimoto grew up in California, but with a difference - his California is part of the United States of Japan. After Germany and Japan won WWII, the US fell under their control. Growing up in this world, Mac plays portical games, haphazardly studies for the Imperial Exam, and dreams of becoming a mecha pilot. Only problem: Mac's grades are terrible. His only hope is to pass the military exam and get into the prestigious mecha pilot training program at Berkeley Military Academy.

When his friend Hideki's plan to game the test goes horribly wrong, Mac washes out of the military exam, too. Perhaps he can achieve his dream by becoming a civilian pilot. But with tensions rising between the United States of Japan and Nazi Germany and rumors of collaborators and traitors abounding, Mac will have to stay alive long enough first....

Critic reviews

“Intermixing the experience of cinema, literature, anime, comics, and gaming, this is the new generation of science fiction we've been waiting for!” (Hideo Kojima, game creator)

“The characters are truly compelling and the world Tieryas created is a joy to discover. And if you come for the giant robots, Mecha Samurai Empire has all kinds and the best robot combat you’ll ever read. Seriously, this is a whole new kind of badass.” (Sylvain Neuvel, author of Sleeping Giants)

“Fascinating and entertaining....I caught myself thinking about the book long after I read it.” (Taylor Anderson, New York Times best-selling author of the Destroyermen series)

Really love this series of books. So glad they found someone that can narrate way better!

Wow!

A most excellent follow up to the first book. Although this one is more of a stand alone story. Hopefully there will be another story set in this alteted world.

Excellent

USJ wasn't bad, maybe a little underwhelming but still fun. MSE was a better sequel that burned the hours away, I liked it more.

Better than book 1

I liked everything about this book.

Recommend to people that like Mecha and what if alternate history’s .

I gave it max stars since I love Mecha books like gundam. And I love history even a history that is opposite to ours. Just to read what if this happened and the aftermath of those events differ from our actual history.

Great book

Gripping characters and story, on top of exceptionally detailed giant robot fights. Pure unadulterated awesomeness. Narrator was great too!

This book is absolutely nuts. And I love it.

Started this book in the paperback version. Decided to continue with the audio version at work. Have to say this one was quite enjoyable

Great story

Great continuation of the story. Narrator much better this time. Hope he writes more in this universe.

Great sequel

I am convinced that this sequel surpasses its predecessor. The mesh of genres is more defined in this one. Clearly, as I listened, I could visualize it as an anime a la Akira and Ghost in the Shell (which is cleverly referenced), or a worthy indirect sequel to Amazon's adaptation of Phillip K. Dick's Man in the High Castle. MSE blew my mind. I am starting the next one as soon as possible. I also need to stress the narration done by De la Fuente. Much much better than the previous narrator of USJ.

An Exceptional Mesh of Genres in One Story
