About this listen

 Dass jemand im Alter von 48 Jahren seine Autobiographie verfasst, ist an sich merkwürdig. Hat er doch aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach einen beträchtlichen Teil seines Lebens noch vor sich und kann sich ein Urteil über dieses Leben als Ganzes nicht bilden.

Nun hat Jakob Wassermann, als er den Essay im Jahre 1921 verfasste, aber gar kein Lebensbild im herkömmlichen Sinne zeichnen wollen. Ihm ging es um die bedrängende Frage nach dem Verhältnis von Jude-Sein und Deutscher-Sein, und diese wollte er nicht in allgemeiner Form erörtern, sondern auf dem Hintergrund seiner eigenen persönlichen Erfahrungen.
