About this listen

This audiobook contains a set of selected sermons and meditations written by one of the most profound mystics and philosophers of the Middle Ages, the German Dominican monk Eckhart von Hochheim, better known as Meister Eckhart.

Near the end of his life, he was accused of heresy by the Inquisition, and later trialed and convicted by Pope John XXII, who strictly forbid his teachings.

Meister Eckhart was probably the first Christian philosopher to recognize the importance of living in the Now, like more recent mystics like Krishnamurti, Eckhart Tolle, and Ram Dass have done:

"There exists only the present instant," he said in one of his most celebrated sermons, "a Now which always and without end is itself new. There is no yesterday nor any tomorrow, but only Now, as it was a thousand years ago and as it will be a thousand years hence...."

According to him:

“Time is what keeps the light from reaching us. There is no greater obstacle to God than time: and not only time but temporalities, not only temporal things but temporal affections, not only temporal affections but the very taint and smell of time.”

In another sermon, Meister Eckhart highlights the importance of "the vast silence within" using these words:

“There is a vast silence inside each of us that beckons us into itself, and the recovery of our own silence can begin to teach us the language of heaven.”

Much has been said about this controversial monk, who was simply ahead of his time, and whose writings have experienced a revival in recent years, not only among Christians of all denominations, but also among Zen Buddhists, Sufi Muslims, Advaita Vendanta Hindus, Jewish Cabbalists, and countless other spiritual seekers. Even renowned atheists like Martin Heidegger and Jean-Paul Sartre popularized his work and helped spread his message among their own followers.
