These were performed by actors from Welles' celebrated Mercury Theatre repertory company, with music composed or arranged by Bernard Herrmann. The series ran from July to December 1938, after which the title was changed to The Campbell Playhouse.

Sound quality makes this unlistenable

I adore Mr. Welles and was so happy to find this series but the sound quality on this one is terrible. It needs to be digitally remastered or whatever else magic they can do to it to make is something you can actually listen to.
