Zweden, 1937. De zeventienjarige Betty staat op het punt haar gelukte beproeven in de grote stad als dienstmeisje bij het gezin van dokter Molander. In de trein onderweg naar Stockholm ontmoet ze Martin Fischer, een hoogopgeleide jongeman van Joodse afkomst die literatuur doceert. Het duurt niet lang voordat de twee bevriend raken door hun gedeelde passie voor boeken en ze beloven elkaar te schrijven.
Betty komt er al snel achter dat ze als dienstmeisje hard moet werken voor de vriendelijke dokter Molander en zijn niet al te hartelijke vrouw, die vastbesloten lijkt het leven van Betty zuur te maken. Gelukkig leert ze snel en lukt het haar om haar draai te vinden in de drukke hoofdstad en dit nieuwe huishouden. Het contact met Martin biedt haar afleiding en hun onschuldige boekbesprekingen groeien al snel uit tot iets anders.
Maar de dreiging van de Tweede Wereldoorlog nadert, en op een dag stopt de correspondentie met Martin abrupt. Alle moeite die ze de weken daarna doet om hem te vinden is tevergeefs. En ze ontdekt een geheim in het huis van de dokter en haar hele leven dreigt overhoop gegooid te worden.
