 In between two Indian tribes, the Potawatomi and Siletz, lies a great lake. According to legend, this lake was the home of the devil. Here, it was said that many bad things happened to the people who did not give due respect to the lake and its master, the devil. Because of this, the people of both tribes only rode their canoes when necessary, to gather fish for their people. Even before they would embark on their day’s job, they would give out sacrifices, often in the form of their best livestock, in order to appease the devil. It was their belief that this would grant them safe access to the lake. However, there was one person from the Potawatomi tribe who did not believe the legends and swam in the lake whenever she pleased. This person was the daughter of the tribe’s chieftain and her name was Gigyago. Gigyago was a young woman with a free spirit and a strong belief in the gifts and miracles life could bring and in the beauty of sincere emotions. She was spirited and often went about her tribe with a demeanor that made everybody appreciate her. She was charming and friendly, and she held a great love for the animals in particular, who also loved her back. She had always dreamed of having a family brought about by love. She believed that marriage was to be spent with the person she could genuinely give her heart to. However, when she finds out her parents have arranged for her to be married to the tribe’s greatest warrior, she is devastated and hesitant. She is disappointed that her decision could be taken away from her like this so easily. Despite her misgivings, Gigyago is open to the idea of getting to know her betrothed before the night of her marriage. She tries to form a relationship with Windago, her husband-to-be, but she is stunned when he rebuffs her with a demeanor that is both cold and distant. Gigyago believes that a warrior like him is not capable of feeling happiness or any kind of love anymore. She expresses her worries to her friend, Halona, who advises her to follow him out hunting. Gigyago takes this advise and follows him in secret, hoping to see him in his more natural state to finally confirm if Windago is as cold as he shows himself to be. Again, he gives her nothing but his cool facade, but Gigyago refuses to give up. She tries again and again and yet he still remains the same. Finally, she is too crushed and disappointed that she refuses to try anymore. Little does Gigyago know, the devil from the lake has been watching her all this time - for many years. When she is most vulnerable, he takes possession of her and everything suddenly becomes a battle of strength and will. When Gigyago discovers that the devil’s powers are in play, she grows desperate. Her world is turned upside down; more and more factors are put into play in this dangerous game of love and power and revelations are made that open Gigyago’s eyes to what has truly been.
