About this listen

Mill's thinking about freedom in civic and social life examines fundamental principles shared among conservative, liberal, and radical politicians. The life of true philosophy stands outside the political battles that are rampant in society and seeks the political wisdom that is necessary for a good life in any age. Mill's philosophical presentation and analysis of those principles stand alongside the reflections of Plato, Aristotle, Marcus Aurelius, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau.

When the officials of any government seek to change the laws that regulate individual liberty or when rhetoricians seek to change public opinion about what individuals should or should not be allowed to say or do, Mill's On Liberty serves as an effective antidote to the poisons of excessive intrusion into the lives of individuals. The present edition is specifically designed to employ the dual nature of rhetoric - oral and written language - and to utilize electronic technology to open Mill's text to contemporary listeners.

Analysis of The Importance of Individual Liberty to a Healthy Society

John Stuart Mills elegantly articulates the importance and power Liberty, particularly the need for freedom of thought and speech by the individual for the good of society.

A timely read in light of the recent rise of the violent, intolerant anti-free speech radical left-wing Marxists calling themselves ANTIFA.

Rock solid treatise on individual liberty

While John Stuart Mill is generally overrated as a philosopher/political economist his writing in easily understood conversational English makes his concepts very easy to understand. In ON LIBERTY his basic point is that a persons life belongs to himself/herself and an individual should be free to do as he/she pleases so long that the freedoms of others are not negatively impacted. The coercive powers of government should simply leave people along so long the persons are not negatively impacting the rights of others. Mill's political economic theories were developed much further by the leaders of the Austrian School of political economics especially by Carl Menger, Ludwig von Mises, and Fredrich Hayek. Both Mises' and Hayek's books are best read in dead tree or ebook format. If the reader has time for only one book Hayek's THE ROAD TO SERFDOM is the easy choice.

The narration of ON LIBERTY is superb.

Excellent content

This guy needs to learn how to use voice inflection more effectively. I can’t follow him sometimes because his general tone is always ‘bewildered’.

What?

I decided to read this book because of the recommendations from other offers that use it as a reference. I guess I will need to read this work a second time because I got lost in the poor performance story and concepts.
