About this listen

A brilliant screenwriter is tragically stricken with Alzheimer's disease. In anticipation of this he has prepared an intricate computer program to look after him and direct his every move. As a result, he fools everyone into thinking that he is still normal, including the police - who suspect him of several slasher murders.

While the screenwriter wanders ever closer to disaster, the computer diligently investigates events as far back as World War II to find the real murderer.

Humorous, touching, melancholy and shocking, this is a mystery with a truly unique twist.

Critic reviews

"Rene Auberjonois's performance is flawless as he effortlessly and convincingly alters his voice for each character and gender. His emotional reading sets the tone, which is humorous, heartrending and suspenseful without trivializing the seriousness of Alzheimer's disease." ( AudioFile)

This is great little sci-fi novella. Yes, it comes apart a bit toward the end but I loved it, and will listen to it again. Rene Auberjonois is a fabulous reader the perfect choice for this sophisticated tale. My great question, WHO is Edward Weller and why is this story unavailable (despite diligent searching) in print form? I found it on cassette, but nothing in print. I have several family members who "don't do audio" and would love to read this story.

Terrific, but why unavailable elsewhere?

Interesting plot, but hard to make really believable, especially with a nazi murder still going strong in the computer age. The dialogues of a demented main character with self involved other characters not noticing, with their fantasy filling in the gaps, are cleverly put together.

Rene Auberjonois does a good job with very little; that said, this is possibly the least-gripping, least-engaging audio book I've downloaded. I feel that the writing is just not that good. The premise is novel, but that's not really enough to make this work. Overall: Meh.
