Much needed for caregivers

Dementia isn’t easy to watch someone go through. My grandfather had it and my father expects to get it. This book was super helpful to not only recognize the early warning signs… but also to remind caregivers to take time for themselves. This book is full of practical tips and advice from how to care for their health and wellbeing as well as some financial planning for those with dementia. It’s a must have.

Important and Supportive

If a loved one is in the early stages of dementia, or even if you suspect that this may be the case, this book is filled with useful and important information. After describing the causes, symptoms, and progression of dementia, author Megan Bishop (who has been a caregiver herself) covers numerous topics important for the caregiver. Throughout, she emphasizes the importance of communication and how to adapt communication depending on how far the loved one’s dementia has progressed. She also repeatedly reminds the caregiver about the importance of self-care, which can be easy to overlook when dealing with the stress and responsibilities of caring for someone else. In addition, she offers numerous dos (such as maintaining a routine and letting the loved one do as much for himself or herself as possible) and don’ts (such as arguing and bringing up certain topics that may inadvertently cause stress). Other helpful topics include explaining the possible reasons or triggers for certain behaviors and how to address those behaviors; ensuring that nutrition, medication, and other daily care needs are met; and activities for the loved one, including those that you can do together.
