About this listen

Baby Frankie is born into an unusual family. Her mother is desperate to find someone to take care of her child, and she doesn’t have much time. Noel doesn’t seem to be the most promising of fathers but despite everything, he could well be Frankie’s best hope. As for Lisa, she is prepared to give up everything for the man she loves; surely he’s going to love her back? And Moira is having none of it. She knows what’s right, and has the power to change the course of Frankie’s life... but Moira is hiding secrets of her own.

A moving tale of unconventional families, relationships that aren’t quite what they seem, and the child at the heart of everyone’s lives.

Kate Binchy reads this complete, uncut story of heartbreak and hope from best-selling author Maeve Binchy.

How could you not love the wonderful, wholesome, emotional, real joys that Mauve Binchy continues to share with her audience. Beautifully read by Kate who honoured the words by bringing us all together to share another lovely visit with these "family members" of the Mauve Binchy world she graciously shares with us all. So enjoyable - please make yourself "feel good". Make sure this book is on your list - become part of the love and inspiration her characters share and impart on its listeners.

What makes this book work so well is Maeve Binchy's talent for creating credible characters and a plot that is simple, straightforward and in constant motion. The events that unfold mimic life, sometimes bittersweet, surprising and full of conflict other times wonderfully predictable. The focus of the book is Noel, who suddenly finds himself assuming responsibility for a newborn baby, Frankie. After some initial doubts, he rises to the challenge of single parenthood and strives to become a better person; vowing to overcome his drinking problem and improve his job opportunities by taking night classes. The network of friends and family that come together to help him are quirky, engaging and infused with warmth and optimism. One of my favorite characters was Noel's cousin Emily. She bubbles over with energy and efficiency, and has a take charge anything can be fixed approach to life's obstacles. This author really knows how to weave a tale and keep you turning pages. This is a delightful light read; sad, amusing, poignant and thoroughly entertaining from start to finish.

This review is spoiler free!
This book has a lot of the features that Binchy fans love: an extended group with "make your own family" types of bonds, characters that make you want to scream but eventually get their due, and lots of fun and drama on the way. It also has one of my favourite features of her latest books: a chance to catch up with many of your favourite Binchy characters from previous books! However, the last chapter is grossly miscalculated. It introduces a wrinkle that is treated far too briefly with a facile resolution that did not sit well with me and kind of wrecked the whole book. If you are a Binchy fan, you won't want to skip this because you can catch up with all those previous characters, but try it and see if you agree with me about the last chapter.

An OK Binchy
