Publisher's summary

In Miracles and Mayhem in the ER, Dr. Brent Russell shares true-life stories of his early days as an emergency room doctor. Contemplative and oftentimes hilarious, Dr. Russell leads the listener through the glass doors and down the narrow halls of the ER where desperate patients, young and old, come to get well. Occasionally heart wrenching and always fast-paced, Miracles and Mayhem in the ER will have listeners holding their breath one second and celebrating the next. Through his night shifts at a renowned Portland, Oregon, hospital, Russell discovers his role and his confidence as he treats people from all walks of life, including humanity's most bizarre, in the ER. Each shift brings a new, bracing story to tell.

Good while doing something boring, terrible accents

Meh. I was on a streak of listening to medical stories and this one just wasn't as well written as the others.

Meh.

Really wasn't anything special. The narrator was generally good, but the accents he gave a lot of people sounded like he was trying to make them seem intellectually disabled. The book itself had as much of the content focused on the author's many outdoor adventures as it did on actual stories of his experience in the ED. . He seemed to try to bulk up the volume of the book by using a LOT of metaphors, including what it was like to drive in traffic. Several of the stories were entertaining, but I wouldn't recommend this to someone with experience in emergency medicine

Not what I thought - but still great!

Based on the audio clip, I assumed it would be a book about different weird and strange stories, unbelievable stories that a layperson would have no idea actually happens in ERs. It wasn't just a list of stories of incredible and crazy things patients have done, but it includes several stories, some unbelievable, some heartbreaking, some funny, of what it is really like to work in an ER. It made your ER doctor human and three dimensional. I listened to it in one day.

Excellent!

This book kept me riveted! As a nurse, it's good to get a feel for what a resident goes through in residency to better understand them. Emergency room medicine is extremely difficult and ever-changing! You never know what to expect when you set foot at work. I applaud your book. The narration was excellent also!

Enlightening

Deepened my understanding of the life of an emergency room doctor. Increased my compassion for their long hours and tough decisions. Book is well written and performed. I appreciated the humor he injected into serious situations. Only downside was, as a non medically trained person, it was a bit too gory and detailed for me at times.
