About this listen

On vacation in a tiny village, Miss Silver investigates a murder with a decades-old motive.

The citizens of Melling are perfectly ordinary—exactly the sort one finds in just about every cozy English village—and to a certain person they might even appear boring. But to Miss Silver, people are always interesting. It has been some years since she gave up work as a governess to become a detective, and her interest in people has served her well. She comes to Melling on vacation—a long postponed visit to an old school chum—but Miss Silver’s business is murder, and her vacations never last long.

The town’s prodigal son has returned, wealthy and without nostalgia for the village of his birth. He intends to sell his manor house and be done with Melling forever. But Melling has not finished with him.

Captivating mystery!

This was a well plotted mystery with many suspects meticulously narrowed to the culprit. The narration was well suited too.

One of Miss Silver's Best

Fast paced, enough dead bodies, some romance, and a new outfit for little Josephine. What else could you ask for? The murderer was a surprise until near the end. A thoroughly enjoyable mystery f the ld school.

Please put more of the rarer Patricia Wentworth books on your list. There are many that are only collectors items in price that many reader cannot afford. />However, if you do, make them available, none other than Diana Bishop should narrate them

Formulaic but addictive

Formulaic isn’t necessarily a liability because it is the recurring plot elements that make these novels cozy or more accurately comfortably and predictably entertaining. You always know where you are with these masters of the genre who don’t stoop to gore and lame melodrama to achieve their effects.
The truly impressive fact is that each of these stories places the mystery against a well plotted and quite real interplay of personal relations that never descends into trite cookie cutter guff.
Very skillful and entertaining.

Good Old-Fashioned Mystery Novel

This story was a delightful with its precise complexity and detail. I changed my own predictions several times during the story, and it had a very satisfactory ending. It was a relief to listen to a quality story that wasn't peppered with obscene language and sexual scenes that were distracting and unnecessary at the best and often offensive. I often wish that books would have ratings (like movies) so I can anticipate what objectionable features may be included.
