About this listen

The early 1930s were desperate times in America. As the country struggled through the Great Depression, many of its finest young men, unable to find work, turned to begging or stealing to get by. But others began to roam the country, searching for their dreams. Many stories are told about the plight of these young men, but none as touching as the story of Charles "Mittens" Perkins, who traveled to the Boundary Waters Wilderness of Northern Minnesota in 1931, searching for his dream.©2005 Larry Ahlman (P)2005 Books in Motion

Critic reviews

"Danger, humor, a love of the outdoors, and the demands of survival are blended together...a highly recommended read." ( Midwest Book Review)

Very entertaining. Give it a chance. Very few outdoorsy books out there and I am glad I found it.

The listening experience was very unique. The storytelling was very different from most books. I felt like I was right there. Mittens was quite a character.

There are a couple parts that stretch credulity but mostly it's a beautiful and suspenseful survival story (fictional).

Excellent survival story

Note: there's a chance my review was biased by my love of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness , more often referred to by its earlier acronym, the BWCA. I'd like to believe it isn't, but it's up to you to decide.

The story takes place during an interesting period in our history, during the Great Depression. For me, the time is made more interesting as it takes places in the years immediately before my father's birth.

While you won't find a story crammed full of historical references or period-specific descriptions, you will find the compelling story of one man, his dog, and the wilderness he loves while he struggles to survive.

The narration isn't the smoothest I've heard, but nothing to distract me from the story. It's just a simple story about a simple man who learns to be more resourceful and strong than perhaps he believes could be possible.

A gripping short tale
