About this listen

In a world fueled by greed and corruption, where airships rule the skies and coal mines have been turned into prisons, Scarlett Moon has one goal: survive. Being tough and looking out for herself is the only way to stay alive, but when her best friend, Rory, is arrested and returned to the mines, all of Scarlett's carefully built walls threaten to crumble.

After being rescued by an airship full of pirates, led by the sexy and irresistible Asher Kimura, Scarlett finds herself surrounded by cons and fugitives, and thrust into the middle of a coal-smuggling business. When they take her to Columbus, the one place she never wanted to set foot in again, she wants nothing more than to get away. And her discomfort only grows as she becomes increasingly drawn to Asher.

But everything changes when she discovers there may be a way to rescue Rory. Enlisting the pirates' help, Scarlett sets out on a mission to save her friend, praying that her overwhelming attraction to Asher doesn't mean the end to her freedom - in more ways than one.

Not what I was expecting...but I enjoyed it

This book had more of a romantic feel than I had expected but, it's still a great dystopian tale. I love that Scarlett is a sassy, sexy, bad ass that can take out an enemy with the flick of her star. I can't wait to hear more of her story. Overall, its an exciting book, excellent narration. I received a review copy at my request and voluntarily reviewed.

I really enjoyed this

I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this book but I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed it alot.
It's hard to review without giving too much away but my main points are as follows.
It's a new dystopian world that is unlike any others I have read to date which is refreshing, (some out there are starting to sound a little repetative).
The background information that you need to know what happened to make the world the way is is, are is dripped out in a way that keeps you reading, waiting for that next piece of information and wanting more.
The same goes for the story of the protagonist - Scarlet's past, there is just enough coming to you at the right time to keep you reading, it all falls into place quite nicely.
I felt frustrated by her alot, but there are constant reminders that she is still just a young adult (older teen) and that her upbringing has been hard and VERY unconventional so you remember to go easy on her.
You are also constantly reminded that her world is a very different one, she has had to grow up fast and become very hard in order to survive.
I loved the twists and turns of the new people she meets and the hot head way she tackles things.
I felt there was enough story and action to make it a really interesting read and I am looking forward to reading the next instalment in this series as it left me wanting to know what happens next.
I would recommend this for older teens, young adults and even grown adults like me who enjoy this genre.

Moonchild

I enjoyed this story. It was set in a grungy, steampunky world where kids work in coal mines if they have no parents and pirates steal coal. The storyline introduces Moonchild and her friends who get into a bind and meet up with pirates.Heidi Drennan was a fine narrator. I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.

Scarlet and her friends are homeless and on the run after escaping the mines in this crazy controlled no tech world.., They get rescued by a group of Pirates and at first are very wary of this group...but as they get to know each other and Scarlet meets Asher, its clear that this is where she and her friends belong!! SUCH A GREAT STORY!!! Well written, and narrated...Great characters and a very intriguing world!! I recommend!!! I am on to book 2 now!!!

Entertaining, fun elements!

Good narration. She does a great job with all the character’s voices, and she gives a quality performance and quality recording.

Entertaining and interesting story! Fun ideas and premise. There’s a little bit of that steampunk type style; airships and such, I actually would’ve like more of those elements, but still an interesting sort of apocalyptic world. Not a fan of most, if not all of Kate L. Mary’s books dealing with disgusting, sexually deviant men, but it is satisfying that those idiots mostly get what they deserve. Loved Scarlett ability to kick butt; not into her wearing a skimpy skirt all the time when she knows she’ll be fighting, and she is a bit of a brat, but I liked her overall. She’s ruled by her emotions, but I enjoy her tough attitude. She’s had a tough life; parents died, orphan, living on the streets, and dealing with gross men trying to abuse her, so she finds it tough to trust. When Scarlett and her crew get into some trouble, sort of pirate, Asher, and his crew save Scarlett and her crew. Unfortunately, one of Scarlett’s friends gets taken; the friend is in major danger, so Scarlett is forced to trust on the help from Asher and his crew to save her. Lots of corruption, greed, and disgusting people causing problems. The romance was too high school for me; not into the whole annoying long-term ex-girlfriend being a part of the story. I do like the chemistry between Scarlett and Asher though; there’s just a lot of push back from Scarlett because she thinks she doesn’t want a true, loving relationship. It gets annoying, but I’d be wary too with how close Asher and Paget were. Asher and Paget’s past and current relationship is a lot to deal with. Plus, Asher has that whole I’m charming and flirt with all the ladies type of personality, which isn’t an ideal for a future boyfriend. Overall, I found the story interesting and fun!

Dystopian Pirates

Really fun dystopian, pirate, and romance novel rolled into one. It's great fun but I would like to warn that it really is geared towards the YA to an adult crowd. There is a lot of cussing throughout the book. I started listening with my middle schoolers and then finished without them because of the language. Overall, a really great story and a wonderful narrator.

Already started book 2

I’ve loved everything I’ve read by Kate L Mary. While I loved the Twisted series more I know this one will become a favorite as well as it progresses.
Kate is great at world & character building. You’ll envision them and see them in all their details.
Asher & Scarlett need to just give in to their temptations already!
Ready to see the whole pirate crew bring down all the evil in their society. Also need more details on the ‘church’ in the book.
Starting book two tonight.

interesting

This was a well written, creative story about survival, trust, friendship, resourcefulness, loyalty, and courage, but Scarlett had way too many mental monologues or angst for my taste. Other than that I thought the characters were terrific. It's part of a series, so it only ends in a safe for now situation.

I listened at 1.75x speed.

I recieved a free copy of this book, but this did not affect my opinion or review.

Steampunk adventure w/pirates & strong female lead

Moonchild by Kate L. Mary and narrated by Heidi Drennan is a marvelous steampunk adventure! If you are into steampunk, pirates, post-apocalyptic worlds, or strong female leads, I can’t recommend this book enough. I hesitate to say this is for young adults only as it contains adult/darker themes.

What to expect: After Scarlett’s parents died, she was put to work in the mines. She managed to escape and has been on the run since with her friends. Unfortunately, being on the run comes with it’s own downfalls. One night, Rory is taken by the enforcers while they are out scavenging, from there Scarlett’s adventure to rescue her begins. Enter the pirates (some good, some bad) and Asher, a potential love interest that has Scarlett second guessing her ways. This book is a go-go-go story. Lots of action, mysteries (some to be unraveled in future installments), a love story sprouting, and great character development (even the minor characters).

The narrator, Heidi Drennan, did an excellent job with this. Voices are distinct and easy to listen to.

Overall, I recommend- I enjoyed it a lot and look forward to Scarlett’s story unfolding. Kate has a gift for world building, smooth writing, and portraying strong female characters. I would love to see this story turned into a TV series.

Parental guidance/trigger warnings: death of parents (multiple characters), unwanted child (one character who is an adult now), prostitution of females (sex slaves or like situations) by powerful males, death, weapons such as throwing stars, attempted rape when drinking, child pit fighting to death, drugging of a male.

Great Book!

I really enjoyed listening to this! I liked it so much it only took a day to get through it - that's almost 10 hours in a day! Very good!! Narration is excellent, and the story itself is so full of action and danger that it really keeps you on the edge of your seat! The main character is has such an inner strength that you start rooting for her in the first few minutes. She is definitely kick ass and take names later! I loved the slow burn romance that may or may not ignite and take off... we'll have to wait and see! UGH! Can't wait for the next book! Great listen, well worth the money! I received a free review copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving this honest review. Go, buy it now! You won't be sorry!
