An Instant Favorite!

This is a book of wonderful, often comical essays by famous gardeners. In the Audible version, each essay or chapter is read by a different narrator, reminiscent of the author's voice. It's wonderful. Highly recommended.

Romantic gardening

I enjoyed this. You can put it on and pull weeds. Nothing is particularly deep but it has several interesting articles. Also, this collection does have many garden writers that I had never taken the time to read but now I might look them up.

It doesn't teach you gardening but for the person who enjoys gardening it was lovely.

I wish they listed the names of the articles and the authors a little more clearly though.

OK but not really worth it.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I would have included more stories that involved learning something about gardening. It was mostly fluff pieces written by people who wanted to talk about how an experience that may or may not have directly been involved with gardening made them feel.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I would have included more essays about lessons learned - both emotional and intellectual - from gardening in a particular way. For example, I would have liked to hear a story about how attempting to grow daffodils out of season in an impromptu greenhouse worked out and what the gardener who attempted something like this learned from the experience. I would have left out stories about emotional experiences (particularly the sad ones) that were only peripherally related to the subject of gardening.

What about Lisa Banes and Boyd Gaines ’s performance did you like?

Their voices were good, and generally the overall performances were good, but there were times when the reading became somewhat flat. Some of this can be attributed to the material they had to work with, but I thought the perfomances could have been better at times.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No.

Any additional comments?

When an author is putting together a collection of essays about a particular topic, they should make sure the essays are on point and teach a lesson. Some of these essays just meandered around endlessly about nothing in particular, least of all about gardening. If you want to learn about gardening from people who can teach you something, this is not the book for you.
