Morlocks in the Basement is hands-down the best new book I’ve read—or rather, experienced—in years. Carolyn Colburn’s memoir is a riotous, bittersweet, wildly original blend of chaos and clarity, delivered with razor-sharp wit and genuine heart. It had me laughing out loud, tearing up, and occasionally muttering “WTF?!”—in the best way possible.

Through Colburn’s vivid storytelling, I felt like I was right there living the glorious mess of the 1970s: roller skating on acid, dodging phone calls from jail, and navigating motherhood with grit, humor, and the occasional flying pig. Somehow, between the laughter and insanity, I also walked away with new recipes, an appreciation for microfibres, and a surprising dose of life wisdom.

And I have to shout out Lee Waterhouse, whose narration was nothing short of outstanding. Lee brings this memoir to life with just the right mix of emotion, irreverence, and perfectly timed delivery. Every quirky moment, every heartfelt pause, every outlandish twist landed with authenticity. The performance elevated an already unforgettable story to another level.

If you’re looking for something refreshingly different—equal parts hilarious, poignant, and unfiltered—Morlocks in the Basement is an absolute must-listen.
