About this listen

A genre-busting postapocalyptic first novel - a pause-resisting adventure channeling Animal Farm as imagined by Cormac McCarthy

The "war with no name" has begun; its goal, human extinction. The instigator of this war is the Colony, a race of intelligent ants who, for thousands of years, have been silently building an army that will forever eradicate the destructive, oppressive humans. Under the Colony's watchful eye, this utopia will be free of the humans' penchant for violence, exploitation, and religious superstition. The final step in the Colony's war effort is the transformation of surface animals into high-functioning two-legged beings who will rise up and kill their masters.

Former house cat turned war hero Mort(e) is famous for taking on the most dangerous missions and fighting the dreaded human bioweapon EMSAH. But the true motivation behind Mort(e)'s recklessness is his ongoing search for a pretransformation friend - a dog named Sheba. When he receives a mysterious message from the dwindling human resistance claiming Sheba is alive, he begins a journey that will take him from the remaining human strongholds to the heart of the Colony, where he will discover the source of EMSAH and learn the ultimate fate of all earth's creatures.

Editorial reviews

Editors Select, January 2015 - I now know without a doubt that my cat has it out for me – since I’ve caught her three times hanging out on my copy of Mort(e), as if surreptitiously taking notes. Robert Repino’s highly anticipated debut has shades of my favorite book from 2014, The Bees, but it’s much darker. A colony of super intelligent ants is planning the vengeful destruction of humanity, turning cats and dogs into soldiers, and at the center of our story is the great warrior Mort(e) (formerly a neutered, declawed housecat named Sebastian). Ok, so this might all sound ridiculous, but it’s actually blindingly smart and well-executed. Though less of a direct parable than Animal Farm, the big issues of mortality, love, honor, and loyalty are all at play here in a bleak, well-imagined apocalyptic world. Emily, Audible Editor

Weird but good

Would you try another book from Robert Repino and/or Bronson Pinchot?

Bronson Pinchot brought the book alive for me. Without him I would not have continued listening to it. Somehow his performance was so good that it surmounted the weird happenings in the book.

Which character – as performed by Bronson Pinchot – was your favorite?

Wah Wah, was the most interesting secondary character for me, followed closely by Cul-de-sac. I found their back story interesting, very nicely performed by Bronson.

Do you think Mort(e) needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No. I don't see the need for it.

An excellent book, some trimming needed for audiobook

All things being equal, this is an exceptional novel. I think it handles the tension between the modern view points on religion without coming down on either side. I also have to say that the author did a great job in all of the phases of the novel. There are one or two parts where something was done to portray machine level communications. In the printed book, this would've been understandable. However, in an audio book, these long series of numbers or letters without meaning were a little tedious. However, such was solved by simply pressing the advance 30 seconds button on the application. While I appreciate an unabridged novel, moving from format to format might engender a couple of changes. However, both the storytelling and the narration were utterly exceptional.

A unique and thoroughly enjoyable adventure.

It is difficult to really explain what was so fun about this book without giving away too many spoilers or diving too deep into philosophical territory. I enjoyed the characters, found it easy to suspend any disbelief, and was always eager to see where the journey would lead. Among all the deeper messaging in the book was a wonderous tale of intrigue, fantasy, and love. Excellent read/listen.

HOLY SHIT - this book is amazing!!!

Calling all sci-fi, fantasy, philosophic, animal-loving and everyday readers. You need to listen to this book stat. Please be aware that this story is incredibly existential and dystopian - it will depress you. Consider this practice for emotional resiliency because all the feels and discomfort are totally worth it. I cried at certain characters histories and the overall narrative is one of great loss as well as hope. Take it in small doses if you must, just don't stop listening.

The narration is PHENOMENAL. The full story completely worth every penny and more. I've read fantasy and sci-fi books since I was very young and this is well-paced, well-rounded, unexpected, action-packed and emotional and nerdy enough to keep me fully engaged and finishing this book in three days.

Rarely do sequels or further character books match or compare to the compelling power of books like this. I'd still read any books from this author just to check out what's going on in his literary noggin' though - he's that good.

Happy listening!

A new favorite!

An amazing, imaginative, unique and beautifully written story. The author really personifies his animal characters well, making them easily relatable and memorable. An excellent story, it touches on many relevant social issues and social structures but does so in a way which keeps the reader wanting more. This book, on the other hand, may be offensive to some but get over that and look at it for what it is: a master piece, a thought- provoking classic. I thought it was really interesting and for sure, I’ll never look at my dogs the same again. 😁

Oddible is an understatement!

While I was intrigued by Audible’s decision to have their editors choose the best of the oddest books they have come across and loved it, (Oddibles), this one kept me reading to the very (yawn) end… I am let down & disappointed. I don’t plan to continue reading this series - just not my genre. Kudos all around for the clever idea, you might like it.

Masterpiece

The performance makes this an astounding audiobook. Each and every character has a distinct accent and tone and given most are animals that's impressive. The story itself is important, interesting, and full of excellent details to immerse readers fully. I have not been invested in a book series like this in years.

What a gem!

I absolutely loved this book. At first, I didn't think I'd enjoy it but not was I wrong. Loved the story and the voice actors brought it to life. Just an amazing read or listen all around.
