About this listen
James Henry Ferguson doesn't belong here. After a highly publicized fall from grace, James attempts to flee from the chaos in his life. He ends up in a community he had never heard of before, one that has been neglected and ignored by everyone in rural Ham, Mississippi. A place of abject poverty, the neighborhood is commonly referred to as "Around the Way."
Within a place forgotten by the rest of the world, politics can be a dangerous game. When a troubling discovery is made, the entire neighborhood is rocked to its core and James is forced to confront his own past in order to help the community have a future. He will have to find the strength to fight for the neighbors he once disregarded and avert a heart-breaking disaster. A self-identified failure is forced to uncover the wisdom of his past in order to recognize that money can't solve every problem.
Full of never-ending twists and turns, no one can prepare themselves for the surprises in store. Mr. Jimmy From Around the Way is a story about failure, self-discovery, empowerment, and the possibility of redemption.

Good story, bad narrator
The narrator almost ruined this story for me. His pauses, phrasing, mispronounciations, and horrible female voices are just bad. He's also overly dramatic. I wish I had read a hard copy instead. I will avoid this narrator in the future.

Worst. Narration. Ever.
The story is wonderful!! But the book and read it!!
Sadly, I have never heard such awful narration. Awkward pauses that aren’t even fixed by speeding up the book speed. It’s terrible. I can’t imagine how it even made it through production. I honestly didn’t know that books on audible could be narrated this poorly. After I choose books for my last credits I think I’ll cancel Audible and use the library. This narrator was just too terrible to risk again.

Amazing, authentic writing and storytelling!
After listening to the audiobook, my mind wanders at all the ways Mr. Jimmy reconnected with his core self and made post e impact in the community he lived in while having to accept and work through the ripple affect of a dishonorable choice he made. This writer draws you in and layers the story in a way that pulls at your heart, twists it at times, and then releases it with some triumph. At times I was cheering internally for these characters.
Fav quote: (may not be exact and it had me laughing out loud)
“He’s about as mixed up as a June bug born in July!”

The power of sharing
It has been a long time since a story has brought me to tears. At the same time, the range of emotions throughout the entire book was quite surprising to me. The author has done an outstanding job in describing our weaknesses and strengths, but most of all the incredible hypocrisy that some people of one race have towards others.
The compassion, understanding, and love that a small community can feel took me back to my childhood when my grandmother and I would walk on the dirt roads of our small town and I would listen to her words of wisdom and wit, cherishing the moment.
The story of Mr. Jimmy is one that should be read in all classrooms. It is superbly written.
