About this listen

In My Bonny Light Horseman, the infamous pirate, riverboat seductress, master of disguise, and street-urchin-turned-sailor Jacky Faber has been captured by the French and beheaded in full view of her friends and crew. Inconceivable?

Yes! The truth is she's secretly forced to pose as an American dancer behind enemy lines in Paris, where she entices a French general into revealing military secrets - all to save her dear friends. Then, in intrepid Jack Faber style, she dons male clothing and worms her way into a post as a galloper with the French army, ultimately leading a team of men to fight alongside the great Napoleon.

In this sixth installment of the "Bloody Jack" series, love and war collide as the irrepressible Jacky Faber sets off on a daring adventure she vowed she'd never take!

I am thoroughly enjoying this series

I normally listen to spy thrillers so this series is new for me. Funny and outrageous swashbuckling.

So stunned, saddened and downright overcome, RIP

I stumbled upon the Bloody Jack series years ago. I had no idea I was going to enjoy the authors stories, characters and narrator so much. This series became a Treat series for me. After gorging on the first 4 books I decided to slow it down and treat myself to 1 or 2 more books in the series each year. As I finished this book I decided to see how many more books were left and discovered that while there are 12 books in total, nothing had been written since 2014. Authors often complete a series and move on so I went further. That's when I discovered L.A. Myer had passed away and the final book was published posthumously. Life is waiting to do that to us all but it did kinda stun and sadden me.

I took a bit of solace in figuring I would at least get to enjoy Katherine Kellgren's incredible narration as Jackie Faber for the forceable future. I had looked her up after the first book and saw she was a very active and sought after artist so that was comforting in it's own way. Until today, when I checked in to see what her latest narration was and discovered she also had passed away in 2018. I must say finding that out really took the wind out of my sails.

I'm an old Boomer myself and the knowledge of life's twists, turns and shortness is not unknown to me. But I can attest that it has giving me the pause we all hopefully get when we go from sadness to contemplation then thru to gratitude. I'm going to slowly and gently experience the remainder of these wonderful books with a whole new level of gratitude and thankfulness for the gifts they've left us.

Loved it!

Just like all the previous books in this series, this one is entertaining, funny, and generally fast moving. There were a couple of strange/out there moments but overall, I love this series and can’t wait to listen to the next book!

Our sailor now is on land

It takes some rather odd circumstances to get Jacky into close proximity with Napoleon himself. But the upshot is that the reader is forced to consider that war is not simple with good guys all on one side and glory as the reward.

Several characters remark that our heroine has 9 lives, it's probably more like 20, I've lost track of the many times she is at the point of dying when. . . something happens and she is saved! Ah well, that's the genre after all.

Kellgren continues to surpass all expectations. In this book, she has to indicate that Jacky is speaking French with an American accent, while continuing to narrate in her original Cockney. She also gets to do German and Russian accents for a change. Without her, I probably would never have picked up this series written for a younger audience and wouldn't have gone past one or two volumes. I only wish I had children the right age to appreciate these books.

Wonderful narrator - but creepy elements

I am in awe of the narrator. I feel like I'm treated to a very special performace--and she absolutely makes the book.

Downside, I am an adult. I don't have kids, but I do wonder about the sanity of any author treating sexual violence, assault and rape in such a blase manner as this author does, especially in a book targeted for a young audience. Seems to be getting worse in each book. Be forewarned.

A most remarkable narrator!

What made the experience of listening to My Bonny Light Horseman the most enjoyable?

Katherine Kellgren's portrayal of the characters and her ability to infuse the story with such enthusiastic life. Very few narrators I have listened to perform to her level.

What did you like best about this story?

The fantastical situations the lead character finds herself in and her realistic responses to them.

What does Katherine Kellgren bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I have a vivid imagination when I read a good book and often come close to forgetting I am just reading a story, but, listening to Katherine does makes me forget I am listening to a book being read.

Outstanding!

This entire series is outstanding! The stories are absolutely packed with excitement. I think the narrator is the best I’ve ever heard and I’ve listened to a lot of them!! This lady deserves some sort of emmy or something for her performances!!
