Publisher's summary

Do you want to be an herbalist?
Native American herbalists used herbs for more than just healing ailments; they incorporated herbs into their religious ceremonies, daily routines, and even garments. They had an intricate understanding of every aspect of plants, from how to tend them and harvest them properly to how they absorbed the sun's energy and utilized its nutrients in flower development.
It's estimated that between 700-2,000 plants were used for medicinal purposes by the Native Americans. Those that didn't grow themselves used plants from other tribes as well. The knowledge of herbs was passed down using a variety of methods. Sometimes it was passed down through oral tradition; in some other cases, a healer would memorize and write it down or store it in a scroll. There would often be periods when the knowledge was needed, such as during harvest or drought seasons.
Hunting and gathering knowledge of plants was essential in Native American culture. Certain tribes would strictly forbid the consumption of particular herbs because they were toxic and could cause severe illness or death if ingested. "Misuse was strongly frowned upon in tribal communities because misdiagnosis or mistreatment of a patient's ailment—whether physical, mental or spiritual—could lead to death and worse: spiritual retribution from the offending spirit."
