Publisher's summary

The incredible story of the most decorated chaplain in US military history and his path to sainthood in the Roman Catholic Church.

Father Emil Kapaun, a humble priest, went far beyond the call of duty during World War II and the Korean War. Often found with the combat medics on the front lines, unarmed, ministering to the wounded, and known for his intense devotion to the soldiers whom he called “my boys,” Kapaun became the most decorated chaplain in US military history, awarded a Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross and the Legion of Merit.

But Father Kapaun’s leadership, bravery and selflessness don't end there. When the story of human history is over, evil, death, darkness—they don’t get the final word. It was Father Kapaun’s love for God that gave him the courage to lay down his life for his friends and for his country.

Writer John Stansifer has spent years interviewing veterans and ex-POWs. Coupled with other interviews or self-published war experiences, as well as material from the National Archives and rare access to thousands of unseen documents, No Bullet Got Me Yet unveils the compelling history of the life of Father Kapaun as related by his friends, family and fellow soldiers, as well as in his own words from the numerous letters he wrote from the 1930s all the way to the battlefields of the Korean War.

It’s about goodness

A positive in an otherwise negative world
Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2024
I was surprised and pleased at how positive this book was to read/listen to. First off, this book is for all faiths and as well as those who have no religious convictions (me). While it is based on Catholic beliefs, it transcends and binds us all by instilling what is good. The story is compelling and factual. It is pleasant to read and the audio book easy to hear and understand. I was hesitant at first to put it on my reading list because I am not a part of any religion but it kept beckoning my attention. I love books about real people doing real things with their lives. I look for books with will enlighten me and help me understand what was going on in our history. I rank No Bullet Got Me Yet as one of my top 10 favorite books and highly recommended that you give it a “shot.” The world needs more people like Father Kapaun. I truly enjoyed this book and how well it played on Audiobook. NOTE: Some readers may find the first few chapters to be slow paced but they are required chapters to understand the background of Father Kapaun. Personally, I find learning about a hero’s early life to be some of the best reading.

Great story about a Kansas Chaplain American hero.

I recently started listening to historical accounts of stories and people's lives. Being from Kansas myself, I felt compelled to listen to this one. The story being told was great, in just the right amount of detail to really be able to relate to the events that were happening at the time. The author spent years researching and investigating everything he could to get the facts and details properly documented. I learned a lot about the history of the US military as a by-product of learning about Father Kapaun. Great book and I highly recommend this!
