Publisher's summary

From number one best-selling author Toni Maguire comes a new true story of abuse and survival.

'This is my story, though our personal stories are not ours alone, are they? Small children have no say in the direction their lives take. Even before they have learnt to walk and talk, they are trained to obey the demands of those charged with their care.'

Daisy-May Jones was four years old when she was told by her parents the family was moving halfway across the world to Australia for a better life. Leaving everything behind, including her beloved grandparents, Daisy-May spent a happy and secure few years adapting to a new life. But after the breakdown of her parent's marriage, she stepped into a nightmare as her mother introduced a new step-father to her and her disabled brother.

What followed was years of sexual, physical and emotional abuse. Obsessed with manipulating Daisy-May and her sexual education, her step-father continued to abuse her until she was 15 years old. All alone in 150 acres of wilderness, Daisy's only wish was to return home to her grandparent's and their love. Eventually, she managed to do so and now works in mental health, supporting others who have been sexually abused and helping them plan their way forward.

Confusing plot

I am a little confused about the purpose of this book. I mean it’s more like a memoir than a story of abuse. There was a part of the book that spoke of abuse but it didn’t even end with any dramatic conclusion—it just gradually ended. How humiliating would it be to be a mother and your daughter doesn’t ever tell you that her husband is a predator. Is the story supposed to make you feel bad for the man that turned into a predator because it seems like that was the point—obviously I don’t but it could have been better.

abuse is confusing

it's difficult for children to speak out when abused. as an adult we see how it seems so logical to say something. but embarrassment or other reasons can leave a child silent. it was still frustrating but it's the truth of how she felt at the time. I'm glad she got her happy ending though. I was wondering how her mother felt or if she ever told her the truth which I hope she did but over all it was a very good book. her brother I loved so much. he was a very special young man.
