About this listen

A revealing and beautifully open memoir from pioneering industrial music artist, visual artist, and transgender icon Genesis P-Orridge.

In this groundbreaking book spanning decades of artistic risk-taking, the inventor of “industrial music”, founder of Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV, and world-renowned fine artist with COUM Transmissions, Genesis P-Orridge (1950-2020) takes us on a journey searching for identity and their true self. It is the story of a life of creation and destruction, where Genesis P-Orridge reveals their unwillingness to be stuck—stuck in one place, in one genre, or in one gender. Nonbinary is Genesis’ final work and is shared with hopes of being an inspiration to the newest generation of trailblazers and nonconformists.

Nonbinary is the intimate story of Genesis’ life, weaving the narrative of their history in COUM Transmissions, Throbbing Gristle, and Psychic TV. It also covers growing up in World War II’s fallout in Britain, contributing to the explosion of new music and radical art in the 1960s, and destroying visual and artistic norms throughout their entire life. In addition to being a captivating memoir of a singular artist and musician, Nonbinary is also an inside look at one of our most remarkable cultural lives that will be an inspiration to fans of industrial music, performance art, the occult, and a life in the arts.

Wow

It’s extremely rare for me to be so emotionally impacted by a book. I put off the last half hour of the book because I knew it would make me unbearably emotional and I was right. I was emotional for two major reasons. The first is that I’ve never been so immediately drawn to and seen by a person I’ve never met and never will get the opportunity to meet. It felt like a kick in the teeth, a push off a cliff and a big hug all in one. It was what I’ve needed to hear for so long and something I should return to to remind myself of who I am and what I want to be. As Gen says at the end of the book, is has been done before and it can be done again. From COUM to TG to TOPY and Psychic TV, each and everything they did creatively and personally (will their EQUALLY as important co-creators Cosey, Chris, Sleazy, all their COUM and Psychic collaborators etc) was fascinating, inspiring and motivating. I felt seen and loved by a person who could never know me.
The second reason is, I know that Cosey has come forward with allegations of abuse against Gen. I do not know the extent and fully intend on reading her book next, but as I also dearly appreciate and love her work as well as the collaborators of TG etc, I am nervous that I will lose that tether I so quickly and intensely formed with Gen through their book and their art. I have never before struggled with such a task as no one has ever been such an inspiration to me on such a fundamental level and as I am equally devoted to Cosey and the other members I do not know how I will hold all of this simultaneously. I will regardless keep the ideas and comfort of being uncomfortable with me forever and that is something I will forever be grateful for.

ALSO: the narration was fantastic — I was gripped by Paul’s natural unique voice and could listen to them talk forever!

The Cut Up applied to life

Experiences I did not know I needed to hear. The book brings more awareness and understanding to an extraordinary person and the people they interacted with through their journey. An insight look at the development of an unforgettable philosophy/ practice
