About this listen

N.W.A. - N.ot W.ithout A.lonzo is the audiobook that holds the back story of West Coast hip hop, as told by the Godfather of West Coast hip hop, Alonzo "Lonzo" Williams. It details the early beginnings, starting in 1975, when disco was king, and by 1979, disco was dead and gave birth to the rise of hip hop.

As a young DJ, club owner, and promoter by the age of 22, Lonzo had the hottest club in the city of Los Angeles, The Eve After Dark, where he met the young Dr. Dre, DJ Yella, and Cli N Tel, to form the legendary hip hop dance group, The World Class Wreckin Cru. With the hottest night-and-tight group, Lonzo created Kru Cut Records, where signed a teenage Ice Cube to his label.

The audiobook will fill in all the gaps left by the movie Straight Outta Compton, including meeting Easy E and introducing him to Jerry Hellers. If you are a hip hop fan and want "the real" about the "World's Most Dangerous Group" and all the players that paved the way for West Coast hip hop, this is the audiobook for you, told by the man who was there from the very beginning.

Absolute Masterpiece

I’m a Filmmaker from Compton and I can honestly say that this audiobook is so visually vivid, it’s literally like watching the Prequel to Straight Outta Compton. I can’t wait for the Documentary based off of this book. N.W.A. Not Without Alonzo is a Masterpiece. Thank you Lonzo!!

Funny, informative and very entertaining.

If you've ever been to a picnic and have been captivated by an Uncle or family member sharing a story about something that happened in the past then this book is for you. It does a great job retelling what the scene was like pre NWA and how he contributed to the group's formation. If the book had been narrated by a professional narrator or someone other then the author it would have probably lost most of it's appeal. Most of what makes it enjoyable is hearing the first hand account from the man himself even with all the narration mistakes that it has. He comes across as totally authentic, not playa hating and takes no more or less credit than he deserves. Part hustler, part businessman but 100% real and from the perspective of an OG who was there when it happened. Highly recommend.
