Matteo Bandello (geb. um 1485 in Italien, gestorben 1561 in Agen, Frankreich, verfasste zahlreiche Novellen nach dem Vorbild Giovanni Boccaccios. Einige davon dienten William Shakespeare als Vorlage für seine Dramen, davon die wichtigste die Novelle über den tragischen Tod zweier unglücklich Leibender Romeo und Giulietta.
