A obra versa sobre o regime de Juan Manuel de Rosas, que governou a Argentina com mão de ferro por mais de duas décadas. Echeverría acreditava que o governo de Rosas era prejudicial ao progresso do país e ia contra os ideais de liberdade que marcaram a independência.
