About this listen

—ABOUT THE BOOK: This well-researched historical fiction trilogy is an inspiring story of an unlikely heroine from a small rural community in Arkansas. The American Red Cross was preparing for war in 1916 and 1917 when America and England were trying to make it go away, and Germany was forging ahead. In the midst of this uncertainty, a young and determined Arkansas girl, smitten with the desire to be a certified nurse—and bolstered by a praying grandpa, unusual (and unconventional) bravery, and almost certainly an overworked angelic guardian—continues a journey that shapes the future for her, the folk of Wishbone Hollow, and many souls across the Atlantic.

OLD MEN MAKE WAR & YOUNG MEN DIE: A Novel of Historical Fiction
On September 22nd, 1917, certified Nurse, Rowenna Moffat—just shy of 18—boarded the SS Red Cross, better known as the Mercy II, for the dangerous trip across the Atlantic. The vast ocean and inclement weather were concerning, but for Rowenna, the deadly German U-boats were the real terror. Even so, she had done a lot of things despite being terrified. Volunteering to serve with the American Red Cross in Belgium to care for injured soldiers was just the latest. No one back home was surprised when Rowenna—“The Girl with the Gun,” as the locals called her—had scored as an “EXPERT” marksman during training and then designated as Group Leader of the thirteen other nurses from Arkansas and Oklahoma. They were all part of the experiment of Alpha One, an effort by the American Red Cross to use what was available for what was needed to support the war effort. This is their story.
