Editorial reviews

One Beastly Beast, narrated by veteran good sport and jolly Australian voice artist Stig Wemyss, features four wonderfully eccentric children’s stories by author Garth Nix - a prolific Australian fantasy writer.

These four silly and fantastical tales include wonderfully described mythical encounters with rat pirates, bizarre eyesore aliens, giant sea serpents, and a princess matching up against a beast.

This would perhaps be an ideal bedtime listen for brave and imaginative little ones who aren’t afraid of monsters under their bed.

Critic reviews

"These four gently tongue-in-cheek adventures pit clever youngsters against unusual creatures - pirate rats who steal DVDs, aliens, a mechanical dragon, and a misunderstood sea serpent. Each time, clueless adult authorities ignore or are stymied by the supposed menace, but the hero is able to resolve the situation successfully and nonviolently. There is a strong emphasis on creativity and individual initiative, and a gentle reminder that brains are better than brawn.... The positive message and amusing stories make this a good choice for younger fantasy fans." (School Library Journal)
"Thoroughly ridiculous and hugely enjoyable." (Kirkus Reviews)

Fantasy without concern

Any additional comments?

Why do adults shy away from "Kids" books? This was a quick listen and I did it almost all the way through in one sitting. It was enjoyable, funny and certainly did not have a care from the adult world. The settings are similar to today's world with DVDs. This book was funny and had me laughing out loud. Why do we stop allowing our brains to think the unreal and all the curious, silly possibilities? Is it because adults aren't supposed to be silly? Is it because we only think in terms of limiting our imaginations?

Garth Nix is a wonderful author and gives an afternoon a great break from adult, worldly thoughts.

Stig Wemyss is a fantastic narrator. I giggled a lot with his accent and character impersonations.

THANK YOU TO BOTH! I loved my afternoon!
