About this listen
She's pregnant with his child when he deserts her?
Home in 1912 Chicago for the summer, Louise Clifford finds herself, once again, lost in the shadow of her more accomplished sister. When the alluring Texan, Charles Watson, pursues her, she clings to the lifeline he promises. However, after six weeks of bliss, he abruptly leaves.
Hurt and angry, she sneaks away in search of him. Finding him in his hometown of Austin, she's confused to learn he's answering to a different name. Now everything he told her back in Chicago is in question.
She's trapped. She needs him but knows he's not the man she knew. What else could he be hiding?

Story
Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

Her family was issued an insane ransom demand: $25 million in cash and jewels, payable by the end of the school day, otherwise they’ll never see her again. It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. Traumatic & Unexpected Turns!!
Story that touches on the complexity of a sisterhood relationship in the beginning, and naiveness walking into love for the first time. While this story has many twists and turns that absolutely nobody could expect, as the reader you almost want to scream at the main character for not seeing the obvious sometimes. It’s not quite the love story I was expecting, but conveyed feelings of betrayal and confusion any experienced lover has felt before. A story of trauma of all kinds.

Great Storyline
Oh my gosh, you guys, like, this book is the best thing I've listened to in forever! From the start, I was hooked, I literally couldn't stop listening! Easily doable in a day - it made doing chores fly by! D.J. gives us some crazy unexpected twists and turns, creating this ultimate villain you just love to hate. And the heroine, Louise? OMG, I was rooting for her the entire time, she’s totally fierce and ready to take down this monstrous guy. The ending was super satisfying, and I totally loved the narrator too. Five stars, no question!

Great Thriller!
This was my first D.J. Maughan's book, and won't be my last. One Desperate Life is a captivating story, filled with suspense, mystery, danger, and twists and turns. Louise's story is set in the early 1900s. This thriller is an emotional roller coaster, fast-paced, intriguing, and heart-pounding. The plot is well crafted, and enthralling. Stephanie Richardson is a new narrator to me. She did an excellent job bringing this story to life.
