About this listen

Most people know that Oppenheimer ran the Manhattan Project - the organization that developed the atomic bomb for the United States in World War II. Some also recognize the name Heisenberg. Not the Walter White character from Breaking Bad, but Nazi Germany’s top theoretical physicist who had the Allies so worried he would make the first atomic bombs for Hitler that they sent assassins to make sure he didn’t. In 1928 these two were friends working on co-authoring research together; by 1942 they were on opposite sides of an atomic arms race. One of them made sure Hitler was unable to win the war by dropping atomic bombs on Moscow and New York. It was much closer than most people realize.

Conspiracy Theories Wrapped in Facts

I was hoping this book would be an interesting compare and contrast of Oppenheimer and Heisenberg but it was facts woven into a tale of much conjecture by the author. Sadly, I feel many will be swayed by these conspiracy theories. I’ll admit that new facts constantly come to light especially considering past misinformation peddled by government intelligence agencies but this book would have you suspend too much belief. I rank the idea that ancient Indians using nukes thousands of years BCE to a story that rivals Scientologist ideas of the dark lord Zenu.

With a twist

Excellent history with a conspiracy twist at the end. Interesting thoughts from an author who does his research and came to some compelling conclusions.

Book is read by AI. I’ve been listening to books for years and I don’t like this AI transition into audiobooks. There’s no soul or feeling behind them. While the voice is pleasant enough, it’s not a real person. People should not be replaced by AI.
