Communication, understanding, and support
Charlene Collins has cut apart, dissected, and studied the intricate world of the most punk-rock sounding behavioral system known to humankind: opposition defiant disorder. Seriously, it sounds like an epic, mohawk-adorned band that cares not for societies’ “suits” and “squares.” However, the truth is that this is a symptom-based disorder that is actually able to be diagnosed and contains within it a very many traits that are not a walk in the park for parents by any means. My favorite thing about this title is that Collins (author) has really included a focus on self care when it comes to parenting these kinds of things and lays out a compassionate approach to not just coping, but thriving as a parent, with tools that bring about betterment in communication, understanding, and support.

Parenting at its Best!
I'm not a parent, but I am a teacher with many strong-willed children who constantly test my limits. This read gave me straightforward guidance to break our negative cycles. I started focusing on positive communication, and I'm amazed at how small changes improved daily interactions. My students respond better to consistent discipline, and I'm calmer under stress. The best part is these insights didn’t require a big overhaul—just a few tweaks that made a huge difference. I'd recommend it to anyone in a similar spot.

Peace in the house again
This book provides a clear and compassionate approach to managing the tough behaviors that can come with ODD, all while fostering a more peaceful and loving family dynamic.
One of the most valuable aspects of the book is how it breaks down ODD in simple terms. The explanation of symptoms and diagnosis helped me understand this behavior on a deeper level, which made me feel more equipped to address it. The real-life success stories were especially encouraging, showing that meaningful change is possible even in the toughest situations.
I also appreciated the focus on self-care for parents. It’s easy to feel drained and defeated when dealing with ODD, but the tips for maintaining emotional health reminded me of the importance of taking care of myself too.
