About this listen

A new original series from Netflix

"Not just a tale of prisons, drugs, crime, or justice; it is, simply put, a beautifully told story about how incredible women can be" (Elizabeth Gilbert, bestselling author of Eat, Pray, Love.)

With her career, live-in boyfriend and loving family, Piper Kerman barely resembles the rebellious young woman who got mixed up with drug runners and delivered a suitcase of drug money to Europe over a decade ago. But when she least expects it, her reckless past catches up with her; convicted and sentenced to fifteen months at an infamous women's prison in Connecticut, Piper becomes inmate #11187-424.

From her first strip search to her final release, she learns to navigate this strange world with its arbitrary rules and codes, its unpredictable, even dangerous relationships. She meets women from all walks of life, who surprise her with tokens of generosity, hard truths and simple acts of acceptance.

Now an original comedy-drama series from Netflix, Piper's story is a fascinating, heartbreaking and often hilarious insight into life on the inside.

Critic reviews

"A bighearted book that depicts life in a women's prison with great detail and - crucially - with empathy and respect for Piper Kerman's fellow prisoners." (Dave Eggers, bestselling author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius)
"A fantastic tale from the Siberia of America's war on drugs and a rippingly fun read right down to the unexpected moment of closure." ( Elle magazine USA)

Straight-up: Real crime and prison time

What did you like best about Orange Is the New Black? What did you like least?

I have wanted to get this since season one started. Finally Europeans can listen to this alongside Audible friends accross the globe.

The fact that the book explains her stay in a very realistic way. The sex focus in season one was way too much. I do not have any knowledge about prison, but even I knew the sex stuff was not realistic and the book confirns this.
11:11:11should have gone faster. I was bored out of my mind until chapter three .

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I would made it shorter.

Which character – as performed by Cassandra Campbell – was your favorite?

This is a memoir... But, okay. "Yoga-Janet"

What else would you have wanted to know about Piper Kerman’s life?

Where is she today?

A wonderful story about a woman in prison.

What made the experience of listening to Orange Is the New Black the most enjoyable?

Reading and listening at the same time this novel was the best. You can understand the content and the sense of the story through the storyteller's voice.

What did you like best about this story?

How the life in prison in the USA could be for a woman . We don't know many things about this issue at least this is my case and I think it was the most interesting thing for me.

What does Cassandra Campbell bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

There are many expressions that could be considered as slam language, the pronounciation and entonation of the storyteller give me the idea of how the real situation is happening in the novel. You can imagine better how the characters are likely being.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. I think it is a complex book, but very exciting at the same time. It had better to read it with calm.

Any additional comments?

No, I just want to say that I hope to read more books like this.
