Violet lies and steals to get on the Orphan Train going to Kansas where she hopes to make a new start and find a husband. She wants to forget about the fire in the sewing factory that has left her body and mind scarred.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Anyone who enjoys really tedious writing with the same words repeated over and over and by a writer who really believes in rubbing in the guilt!

Would you ever listen to anything by Linda Baten Johnson again?

Probably not.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

She has a stilted way of reading that makes the bad writing sound even worse. Pauses where there shouldn't be pauses, no pauses where there should be, the wrong emphasis on the wrong syllable... that sort of thing.

I couldn't listen to more than the first few chapters, so I can't answer that question

The narrator of an audio book is essential in the listening experience. Good narrators carry the book forward and don't get in the way. This narrator highlighted the bad writing and made it doubly un-listenable.
