About this listen

What does a man know about love?

This is the story of three very different men in love with the same woman. It is also the story of that woman, Francine Widmer.

Francine, 27, beautiful, intelligent, and resourceful, insists on running her own life. Suddenly, control of Francine's life falls apart when she is raped and finds that the doctors and the police are indifferent to the enormity of the crime. Francine wants revenge, and she selects as her instrument the best criminal lawyer in the country. Then more secrets of the dark side of love come to light through the rapist's wife and the attorney's immigrant father.

As each brilliantly rendered character brings his or her case to center stage, we see how varied the shapes of love are, until there comes the one that proves irresistible. This is the triumphant story about the true source of all of life's difficult problems and exciting opportunities: other people.

If you like psychology you will definitely like this book. It is well written, beautifully narrated and very interesting with some deep insights into people's psyches. But above all it is entertaining. The author takes you inside the mind of several people that are brought together as a result of the rape of a young woman. The rapist, the analyst, the father and the lawyer and how it affects all of them including the victim who is above all a survivor. It does not dwell into the ugliest aspects of rape but more into how everyone involved deals and is affected by it and how it brings out sides of people's personalities that would otherwise be kept hidden. It is a wonderfully long book that I heard in two sessions. I hope Audible publishes more by the same author Sol Stein and if possible also narrated by Marguerite Gavin who does a wonderful job.

A very entertaining and interesting book

I bought this book after listening to Sol Stein's book on writing. It is evident after listening to Other People that he employs the techniques he teaches. The narrator is difficult to understand at first and seems to clip words to make the story seem fast pace...The story is good enough to stand on its own and draws the reader despite the narrator's interpretation. It is quick paced, unpredictable enough to be interesting and quite enjoyable even though it was very graphic at times.

Intense and enjoyable

It's a shame that there's not a minus stars for this book. This is the worst book I have downloaded. I am not a prude; however, this is nothing but soft porn and it is not even good porn!! This book is so bad it should be taken off audible.
